Cooling System Upgrades Will Expand Product Mix
NLMK Indiana upgraded its Run Out Tables (ROT) cooling system. The project includes replacing seven of the top and bottom cooling headers, upgrading the laminar pumps, and new Level 1 and Level 2 controls.
This upgrade will enable NLMK Indiana to expand its product offerings to include the production of higher-strength materials, such as Grade 80. The Melt Shop will use fewer alloys, as it can achieve stronger mechanical properties in the Hot Mill by utilizing the higher quench rate and increased total cooling capacity of the new system rather than relying on additional alloys.
Randy Beardsley, General Manager of Strategic Projects, stated, “The new headers have a higher quench rate, which imparts greater mechanical strength to our product during the cooling process. This will allow us to manufacture higher-strength products, reduce alloy content, and broaden our product mix.”
The Project Management Office team, including Eric Baskin and Nathan Street are leading the field installation, supported by our Automation team members Josh Heaton, Linda Bohney, and Jose Constantino are heading the Level 1 and Level 2 testing, installation, and commissioning.
